Bristol Theatre Reviews

Animal Farm Bath Theatre Royal

We went to see Animal Farm at the Bath Theatre Royal on a whim – being fans of George Orwell’s satirical novel based on the Russian Revolution and Stalinist Russia. Quite by accident, the production really hits home at the moment with Russia’s attack and invasion of Ukraine.

This is a cracking production faithful to the original story. It’s told through outstanding use of puppetry, but whilst there are moments of humour, this is not cutesy and cartoonish. It is at times incredibly powerful and as the bell tolls for each animal’s demise, surprisingly emotional.

Boxer’s entrance on stage easily rivals War Horse, the lighting, sound design and physical theatre adding up to an incredible cinematic moment.

The Children’s Theatre Partnership – in association with Birmhingham Rep – have created something really special with this piece of work.
