Definitely Louise at Alma Tavern Theatre Bristol
Through the connection of social media, more awareness has been raised in recent years around autistic adult women who have missed out on an official diagnosis for varying reasons. Perhaps the main reason is due to the inequity of the diagnostic system, which has been heavily weighted in favour of boys for too long. This inequity currently persists into adulthood, making Definitely Louise, coming to the Alma Tavern Theatre, an interesting and relevant watch.
Created by Heath Netherton, the play is about a young woman with undiagnosed autism, struggling to find her place in the world. She has strong opinions, strong language and appears to be quick to anger. In a world of neurotypical tone policing, these are three special things autistic women are rarely forgiven for existing with. Definitely Louise will explore how exhausting masking techniques are used to survive navigating life when you’re neurodivergent and nothing makes sense.
The character is described as a “ballsy, no-nonsense woman ready to tear into anything and anyone she deems ‘a fucking idiot’.” which is probably one of the most authentic female autist quotes I’ve read.
Definitely Louise will be at the Alma Tavern Theatre on 20 and 21 June 2023
