Running With Scissors – Alma Tavern Theatre
An exploration of the weird, wild and wonderful world of women surgeons will be coming to the Alma Tavern Theatre this autumn.
Running With Scissors is solo show written and performed by Ronnie Conboy. She’s a storyteller, actor – and former orthopaedic surgeon who worked in the NHS for 35 years.
The show brings together her love of storytelling and performance with the career which she says shaped her life.
Running With Scissors will bring audiences lesser known true stories about women surgeons who made medical history. The brave ones, the bold ones and the radical ones.
Along with personal reflections from contemporary surgery and plenty of dark humour, there will be historical true stories. Expect tales of cross-dressers defying the law, criminals and radical change-makers who went ahead and picked up a scalpel when society told them not to.
It’s a celebration of the defiant spirit of the women who carved out a place in history.
“Wider society, and women surgeons themselves, are led to believe that we are somehow an exception, isolated in a world belonging to men,” Ronnie Conboy says.
“But there is a long and honourable tradition of women healers, from our earliest beginnings to the present day. I want to reclaim that heritage, to showcase our role models, and share the stories of the fascinating, courageous and frankly, sometimes quite wild women who have shaped our history.”
