SUMMARY:Clare Murphy: The Liar King - The Wardrobe Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Set in Syria\, phenomenal storyteller and guest on The Blindboy Podcast\, Clare Murphy (The Spanking Goddess & Other Discarded Tales) weaves a witty satire on the nature of power and stupid kings. \nIn Damascus a king is desperate to keep his throne\, a citizen is determined to win a life and Syria is at the mercy of a lie-obsessed king. Girls face monsters\, beggars face kings and no one knows which liar will win. The Liar King is an adaptation of the novel Damascus Nights by exiled Syrian writer\, Rafik Schami. \nClare blends contemporary reporting and folklore with her playful wit to unmask who has the real power in the world.

SUMMARY:The City For Incurable Women - The Wardrobe Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Ladies and Gentlethem – Feeling a little upset? Have you tried  hypnosis\, psychoanalysis\, smelling salts and it just doesn’t work?\nTry The City for Incurable Women! \nIt’s 1880s Paris\, and Dr Jean-Martin Charcot is studying hysteria at  the Salpêtrière Hospital. Here\, the doctors go to extraordinary  lengths to prove their theories about the four stages of madness\,  having female patients perform ‘hysteria’ to the public. \nInternational theatre-collective\, fish in a dress\, follows the thread of the history of  hysteria as the audience becomes complicit in an outrageous tale of  medical misogyny. \nBut hysteria is far from over; its social consequences continue to  extend and echo through generations. Stereotypes of ‘madwomen’  today led the company to explore the history of hysteria. \nDiscovering the hilarious absurdity and disturbing darkness of this  story\, The City for Incurable Women offers a queer perspective on a feminist history\, exploring the repercussions for all genders. \n  \nImage Credit – Ellis Buckley

SUMMARY:In Hysterics - The Wardrobe Theatre
DESCRIPTION:In Hysterics is a new play by Late Shift Theatre\, exploring women’s experiences of medical misogyny. \nIt follows the parallel lives of two women\, living 100 years apart\, whose stories unfold through a series of doctor’s appointments. Set in the 1920s and the 2020s\, the play explores women’s experiences of medical misogyny\, revealing how many attitudes\, misunderstandings\, and injustices within healthcare have remained disturbingly unchanged. Drawing on the personal journeys of these two women alongside verbatim accounts from many others\, the play exposes the ongoing failure to adequately study\, listen to\, and treat women’s bodies. While addressing heavy and distressing subject matter\, In Hysterics uses a carefully comedic and farcical tone\, allowing serious issues to be confronted through humour that highlights the absurdity of a system that has failed women for over a century

SUMMARY:Zuma Puma is… The Clown Arcana at The Wardrobe Theatre
DESCRIPTION:For an evening of laughter\, insight and unexpected magic\, The Clown Arcana at The Wardrobe Theatre is the perfect show. \nIt’s created by Zuma Puma\, a Canadian/British ritual clown and comedian. \nShe will be staging a show which brings together spontaneous comedy\, clowning\, interactive games and a collective tarot reading into one immersive performance. \nThe Clown Arcana is based on Zuma’s own hand-crafted taro deck\, used live to guide a real-time tarot reading. \nA live soundscape including DJing and sound effects will be provided by Rowan Quarry. \n“I’ve always loved how tarot can open up new perspectives and invite deeper connection\,” said Zuma. “In The Clown Arcana\, the audience and I co-create the show together\, exploring the moments that arise in real time. It’s unpredictable\, it’s alive\, and it’s always a new show.” \nIdeal for both long-term tarot enthusiasts as well as those new to the practice. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Wheel of Nouns at The Wardrobe Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Wheel of Nouns is a new\, one-person cabaret-comedy about The Gender Fairy and their quest to turn everyone in the world trans…(well sort of). Using a spinning game show wheel\, and the idea that any noun could be a gender. \nThe Gender Fairy invites people to volunteer to have their gender “transed” in a silly\, low stakes way. \nAs the game progresses\, however\, we start to see the cracks in The Gender Fairy’s plan\, and find out just why they’ve embarked on this chaotic quest in the first place. \nPart stand-up\, part theatre\, part game show\,  The Wheel of Nouns illustrates the flexibility of the language we use to define ourselves\, and invites people to revel in their right to choose who they are. \nThe Wheel of Nouns will be at The Wardrobe Theatre on 04 June 2025 \nHome: https://backstagebristol.com/\nBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/chopsybristol.bsky.social\nTikTok: www.tiktok.com/@chopsybristoltt\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/backstagebristol\nYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/chopsybaby

SUMMARY:Scraps - The Wardrobe Theatre Bristol
DESCRIPTION:Bristol creatives Mia Macleod and Daisy Kennedy return to the stage with SCRAPS\, which will be at the Wardrobe Theatre at the end of March. \nScraps is a semi-autobiographical piece of theatre combining dance\, lipsync\, clowning in this comedy satire. \nThe show explores the class divide in within the creative world\, poking fun at the everyday struggles of Austerity-Britain™ and follows the course of two artists who just want to make work that matters. \nMia and Daisy say: “We have different class backgrounds and when creating a show set now\, during a cost of living crisis\, we realised it was something we couldn’t just jump over. By doing that we dismiss a huge chunk of our lives and identities\, but it’s not as simple as working class or middle class and we wanted to pick apart that conversation within our work. The characters in SCRAPS are dramatised versions of ourselves; we have interrogated our own identities and magnified the expectations that may be put onto us dependent on our class bracket.” \n\n\nPhotography by Craig Fuller
