SUMMARY:Nine Sixteenths at Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Theatre maker Paula Varjack\, brings Nine Sixteenths to Tobacco Factory Theatres in February.\n\nIt’s set in the world of mainstream pop cultures and based around the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake ‘nipplegate’ incident at the Superbowl in 2004.\n\nDescribed as a fun\, fast and “hugely entertaining” show\, it explores how Black women are treated by the media – as well as the public’s need for icons and positive role models.\n\nPaula Varjack uses ‘nipplegate’ to examine how the media treatment of middle aged women has changed since the turn of the century.

SUMMARY:A Life with PIP - Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:A Life With PIP\, is a bold\, short-form solo piece\, written and performed by award-winning poet and disability-rights advocate Stephen Lightbown.  \nStephen Lightbown is a Bristol based wheelchair-user\, poet and storyteller whose work interrogates the lived experience of applying for benefit and navigating the UK welfare system. In A Life With PIP\, he turns his own story of applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) into theatre—sharp\, honest\, evocative and full of humour\, frustration and humanity. \nBlending spoken word\, storytelling and raw performance\, A Life With Pip is particularly relevant today given recent proposed changes to the UK’s disability benefits system. The show takes the audience through the absurdity of a process stripped of humanity\, a process that is designed to assess need but too often leaves the applicant feeling humiliated.  \nBased on lived experience\, this is a show that speaks to anyone who’s ever had to justify their existence to a system that’s supposed to help\, and is necessary viewing for anyone who wants to understand the system more.  \nThe show was originally commissioned by Theatre Absolute and first performed at the Shop Front Theatre\, Coventry on August 12 2021.  \n“This is my story\, yes—but it’s also our story: every time someone is made to feel less than simply because they live with a disability\, that’s the system telling them they don’t belong. I wanted to push back. I wanted to say: I am here\, I will tell you how it really is.” — Stephen Lightbown \n\nImage: Theatre Absolute at Shop Front Theatre

SUMMARY:Living Spit Beauty and the Beast - Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:As North-Somerset based\, Two-Person Comedy Theatre Companies go\, Living Spit are widely known as being one of the most physically attractive to ever grace the British stage. \nHowever\, in this tale as old as time\, one of them will be forced to portray a hideous\, foul-tempered beast. \nBut which one will it be?   \nThis is a re-worked\, monstrously-musical\, Disney-defying version of this classic French tale about what it means to be truly beautiful in the 18th century.

SUMMARY:Emmanuel Sonubi: Life After Near Death at Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Hit comedian comes to Tobacco Factory Theatres with his new show\nHe’s a two-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee\, a Live at the Apollo headliner and a Have I Got News for You panellist. \nIt’s Emmanuel Sonubi and he will be in Bristol this November with powerful and hilarious new show Life After Near Death. \nEmmanuel took the whole ‘die on stage’ thing a bit too literally\, once suffering from heart failure half way through a performance. Life After Near Death is a special one for me – it’s personal\, it’s raw\, but most importantly\, it’s funny\,” Emmanuel says. \n“After an amazing time at the Edinburgh Fringe\, across Europe\, and in New York\, I’m buzzing to take this to audiences across the UK. Get ready for big laughs and a few surprises along the way.” \nFor more information about Emmanuel Sonubi\, visit: www.emmanuelstandup.com \nBristol booking details below

SUMMARY:Bad Lads at Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Graeae Theatre Company will be bringing their latest production – Bad Lads by Mike Kenny – to Tobacco Factory Theatres this October. \nThe play has been created from the testimonies of former inmates at Medomsley Youth Detention Centre in County Durham in the 1980s. \nThe prison was used to incarcerate young men who had been involved in petty crime. But what happened inside the walls was much worse. \nThe play gives voice to a group of men who have been unheard in the past and who had their lives wrecked because of a piece of government policy that many would argue was ineffective\, disproportionate and lastingly detrimental. \nMike Kenny’s play uncovers the truth behind what happened to these young men\, revealing how it still impacts their lives some forty years after the events and looks at a system that failed these working-class men. At a time when the cry for accountability is louder than ever; Bad Lads demands remembrance and calls for justice. \nAll performances will integrate British Sign Language (BSL)\, audio description\, creative captions and will be presented in a relaxed environment. \nBooking details below

SUMMARY:When the Morning Stars Sang (& The Angels Shouted For Joy)- Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Master-storyteller Hugh Lupton with acclaimed cellist Sarah Moody\, will be taking to the stage of Tobacco Factory Theatres this September for When The Morning Stars Sang. \nThe show has been described by previous audiences as ‘Totally spellbinding’ and ‘transcendent’. \nDemons\, archangels & djinns; hoopoes\, swallows\, fish\, donkeys and maggots; kings\, queens\, merchants\, fools and the voice from the heart of the whirlwind all contend in this rich interweaving of Apocryphal and Old Testament mystery tales drawing from Jewish\, Islamic and Christian sources.   \nAudiences will encounter Adam and Eve\, Solomon and Sheba\, Tobias and the Angel\, Job and his Comforters… stories that underpin our culture… told in the picture language of the heart\, with vigour and humour\, with rich language and deep magic. \nThis is a chance to shake off old habitual pieties and hear these ancient tales with fresh ears. \nSarah Moody’s playing is inspired by the music of all three Abrahamic traditions\, reminding us that at the core of these cultures (that have been at loggerheads for most of the last thousand years) lies a shared mythology. \nBooking details below

SUMMARY:Women Who Gave No F**ks at Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Story Jam returns to Bristol for the third year in a row\, following sell-out performances and rave reviews in 2023 and 2024. \nThe theatre company is back this month\, calling into Tobacco Factory Theatres with Women Who Gave No F**ks. \nLast time the show came to Bristol\, an audience member gave so little f**ks\, they left wearing a prop diadem. \nThe audience member had been appointed the position of Prize-Giving Godess\, an interactive role requiring the use of a crown. \n“We’re very much looking forward to bringing the show back to Bristol\,” said Lucy Lill\, one of the show’s chief storytellers. “Mainly because the audiences turn up in such numbers\, and with such enthusiasm. Even if that enthusiasm sometimes overflows into acts of theft.” \nIt’s not the first time audiences have been inspired enough to make off with props. \nIn 2023\, someone even made off with a clapometer. \nThe show is completely different every time its performed\, meaning that returning audiences won’t be bored. \nEach storyteller in the show champions a ‘great woman’ from stories of the past. Audiences then get to pick the winner. \nPrevious shows have included one-legged WW2 spy Virginia Hall and Sumerian creation goddess Tiamat. \n“Even though there’s a winner\, what audiences love about the show is they are getting to hear about all these different women\nfrom myth and history whose stories have been buried or overshadowed\, Lucy Lill continues. \n“And we get to hear about the women who have inspired our audiences – the interval is a huge celebration as we invite people to come and write all over the stage the names of the women they want everyone to know about.” \nThe company says they are looking forward to their Bristol visit\, saying there is “something special” about performances in the city. \n“Every time\, we’re surprised by the diversity of people who come\,” Lill says. \n“Audiences have included rugby fans\, students\, academics\, groups of friends on Big Nights Out\, and mums\, aunties and daughters.” \nWomen Who Gave No F*cks will be at Tobacco Factory Theatres 18 – 20 September 2025 \nBooking details below. \n

SUMMARY:Buff at Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Edinburgh Festival hit Buff\, is on UK tour which will be coming to Tobacco Factory Theatres this June. \nThe one-man play\, performed by Jamal Franklin\, follows a plus-sized\, gay primary school teacher. He decides to sublet his flat to a ‘buff’ Instagram model after a bad break-up from a six-year relationship. \nBuff is described as both ‘funny yet poignant’\, exploring LGBTQ themes with hook-up culture and the challenge of body image pressures\, social media jealousy leading to self-acceptance. \nWriter Ben Fensome says: “BUFF came out of a discussion Scott and I had about contemporary LGBTQ theatre and who usually gets featured in those stories\, which actors get cast\, what marketing usually looks like etc. We wanted to explore a character that we hadn’t seen be centred before and out of that discussion our character in BUFF was born. We’ve been really blown away by the response from LGBTQ audiences who have related to us how they haven’t really seen a character be centred like this particularly in queer theatre. I hope it is a call out for the community to look out for each other more\, and the centre point of that is of course\, the ability to love and accept ourselves.” \nCast and Creatives\nMan – Jamal Franklin\nDirector – Scott Le Crass\nWriter – Ben Fensome\nProducer – Emmerson And Ward Productions \nBuff will be a Tobacco Factory Theatres on 07 June 2025 \nHome: https://backstagebristol.com/\nBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/chopsybristol.bsky.social\nTikTok: www.tiktok.com/@chopsybristoltt\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/backstagebristol\nYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/chopsybaby

SUMMARY:Cutting Out at Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Bristol based artist and activist Viv Gordon\, will be coming to Tobacco Factory Theatres in June with her solo play Cutting Out. \nViv is an artist and campaigner whose work is grounded in her lived experience as a Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) survivor. She is Artistic Director of Viv Gordon Company – an arts and social justice organisation creating art and performance to increase the voice and visibility for and with CSA survivors. \nHer show – Cutting Out – is a performance piece set within an installation of hundreds of cut out dolls hanging up and joined at the hands. They come from audiences seeing her shows who have been invited to cut out more dolls to add to the existing ones already on stage. The chain of dolls grows by each performance and workshop. \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nPhotography by Ed Felton \n  \nThrough the performance aspect of the show\, Viv navigates the act of remembering her experiences as a child with what happened next. \nAlongside the cutting out of the dolls\, the performance unites an emerging community of survivors and allies through creative expression and freedom. \n“From being alone in a vacuum of silence\, to creating a whole company that’s about art making\, writing and performing has been an incredible journey\,” Viv Gordon says. \n“It is wonderful to perform ‘Cutting Out’ as it means so much to me to say it all out loud and connect deeply with the audience. Collective witnessing of these stories is the first step in making change. SUMMARY:Double bill: The Britz/Codetta at Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Bristol School of Acting and The Wardrobe Ensemble proudly present an evening of original theatre devised by the graduating class of the ‘Acting and Devised Theatre’ BA programme.\n\n\nThe Britz\n6 Lads.\n27 Pina Coladas.\n1 Gameplan that can’t go wrong.\n\nDippy has finally got the boys together for one big holiday. The all-inclusive is booked\, the itinerary is printed out. But as his childhood friends gather for the big night out\, something in the back of Dippy’s mind tells him that today is the day everything finally explodes. \nBooze. Sex. Ancient Prophecies. The Britz is a playful satire on British holidaymaking\, and a tender dive into the hidden frailties of Lad culture. Packed with chaotic movement sequences\, touching confessions\, and new music. All packaged in the affordable havoc of a lads holiday. \n\n\n\nCodetta: A brief conclusion \nThe end of girlhood.\nThe end of the world. \nThe moment you put away your polly pocket. That time you were truly nasty to your best friend. Learning to kiss and buying your first bra. Becoming a supernova. \nTold through a glittering 2010s pop concert\, with synchronised choreography and original music\, Codetta is an unforgettable farewell to our lost childhoods. \nGrab your hairbrush\, put on your jelly shoes and hit play on the pop renaissance.
