SUMMARY:A Midsummer Night's Dream - Bristol Old Vic
DESCRIPTION:A UK tour of a brand new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, will be coming to Bristol Old Vic next year. \nThe production comes from theatre company Headlong and Shakespeare’s Globe\, with Bristol Old Vic and Leeds Playhouse. \nIt’s directed by Headlong’s Artistic Director Holly Race Roughan. \nHolly says: “The world of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a turbulent one\, the natural environment is upside down and unpredictable\, and the political and social landscape is on edge\, creating a sense of tension that we are all experiencing today. \n“This new staging will explore some of the darker elements of Shakespeare’s well-known comedy\, turning it on its head and asking us to reexamine its themes and subject matter.” \nAdditional creatives announced for the production includes Co-Director Naeem Hayat\, Designer Max Johns and Movement Director Malik Nashad Sharpe. \nHeadlong takes all of the plays they stage and produces them as if they were brand new writing. The company calls this new production of the Shakespeare classic as a ‘striking’ new staging\, asking audiences to look at it ‘afresh’. \nTo escape a society ruled by tyrannical law\, four young lovers flee to the forest beyond the city walls. But the world of the woods has been turned upside down by a fierce battle between the Fairy King and Queen\, Oberon and Titania\, over a stolen child. \nAs their quarrel deepens\, others fall prey to jealousy\, manipulation\, and the dark spells of Oberon’s unruly Puck. As day turns to night and snow begins to fall in summer\, can anyone stop the dream from turning into a nightmare? \nA Midsummer Night’s Dream will be at Bristol Old Vic from 04 – 21 March 2026 \nTickets go on sale to members from 26 June and then general sale from 03 July 2025 \nBooking info below \nHome: https://backstagebristol.com/\nBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/chopsybristol.bsky.social\nTikTok: www.tiktok.com/@chopsybristoltt\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/backstagebristol\nYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/chopsybaby

SUMMARY:Social Immobility - Bristol Improv Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Social Immobility is a 2-act working class construction site comedy written by Taylor Ayling a working-class director\, writer and labourer. It is set in a knock-through of a semi-detached Clifton town house in Bristol. This is a crass\, naughty and bombastic explosion of a play that exploits that fantasy you had when you were getting work done in your house: What are they doing in there? \nThe play follows a monumental day in carpenter Henry’s life. Despite being rotten to the core\, he is undeniably charming and totally loveable. This is the day that his mountain of lies comes avalanching down to finally bury him. \nThe play is about the dualistic nature of building site culture. The freedom\, the debauchery\, the joy of seeing the labour of your day concretely in front of you. These things are the enduring pleasures of site life. But then there is the other side – the racism\, homophobia\, sexism\, transphobia. The crippling performance of masculinity that seems to suffocate some and liberate others. It is also about the dream of social mobility\, how for some it keeps us trapped in a loop of hedonistic despair and yet for the lucky few\, offers a lifeline to something better. \nExpect site humour\, fast paced farcical narrative and a little (albeit highly dramatised) insight into the lives of construction workers

SUMMARY:The City For Incurable Women - The Wardrobe Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Ladies and Gentlethem – Feeling a little upset? Have you tried  hypnosis\, psychoanalysis\, smelling salts and it just doesn’t work?\nTry The City for Incurable Women! \nIt’s 1880s Paris\, and Dr Jean-Martin Charcot is studying hysteria at  the Salpêtrière Hospital. Here\, the doctors go to extraordinary  lengths to prove their theories about the four stages of madness\,  having female patients perform ‘hysteria’ to the public. \nInternational theatre-collective\, fish in a dress\, follows the thread of the history of  hysteria as the audience becomes complicit in an outrageous tale of  medical misogyny. \nBut hysteria is far from over; its social consequences continue to  extend and echo through generations. Stereotypes of ‘madwomen’  today led the company to explore the history of hysteria. \nDiscovering the hilarious absurdity and disturbing darkness of this  story\, The City for Incurable Women offers a queer perspective on a feminist history\, exploring the repercussions for all genders. \n  \nImage Credit – Ellis Buckley

SUMMARY:I Have Been Here Before - Alma Tavern Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Axbridge Community Theare brings J.B. Priestley’s play I Have Been Here Before to the Alma Tavern Theatre. \nA woman\, her husband and a young headmaster meet a mysterious professor at an isolated pub. \nHis probing enquiries reveal that all three are unhappy and confused. They’ve been repeating the same old scenes\, with catastrophic consequences. \nNow\, finally\, is there a chance to break out of the loop? \nLike Priestley’s famous An Inspector Calls\, this 1937 “time play” was influenced by contemporary ideas in science and philosophy. How does Dr Gortler know which characters are headed for disaster? Do we really have the free will to change the course of events? Or are our lives essentially pre-determined? \nAn imperturbable landlord and his spiky daughter add observations on social class into the mix. The whole cast react differently to the arrival of an eccentric foreigner. This all adds up to much more than the average “spooky pub” mystery. We may be watching in 2026\, but somehow\, disturbingly\, we sense we’ve been here before. \n

An unexpected and often hilarious adventure follows\, all topped off with a terrific twist. \nTold from a child’s perspective\, balancing heart and humour\, The Boy at the Back of the Class highlights the power of good friends and courage in a world that doesn’t always make sense and reminds us that everyone needs a place to call home.

SUMMARY:The Children of Mike - Cube Microplex
DESCRIPTION:An original play by Worms Theatre Company\, with an opening act by Pete the Temp. \nA story of the estranged human severed from ancient kinship. A collection of mischievous tales in which the more-than-human-world offers counsel to the lost human. \nThe story asks: Whose world is this? Do you own the pavement beneath your feet? Do you see the invisible faces on the street? We live in boxes and walk in lines. When was the last time you wept to the mountain or cursed the bog? \nThe human used to move with grace and humility. The human used to seek council and responsibility. What must we do to save our lonely souls\, to save our lonely soils\, to save our lonely rock? \nWorms Theatre Company seeks to affect social change through collective creativity. We are not-for-profit\, which means every penny wriggles straight back into our community initiatives — we have raised money for charitable causes (like £1500 for Planetary Repairs) and ran a two year program at Adventure Playground\, Felix Road offering weekly theatre and creative opportunities for young people. \nPete the Temp – poet\, comic and author\, whose work combines spoken word\, human-beatbox and experimental sound poetry. \nThere shall be badgers\, pigeons\, microbes\, religion. There shall be dancing and deities. \n\nTicket link 02/04/2026: https://www.headfirstbristol.co.uk/whats-on/the-cube/thu-2-apr-the-children-of-mike-148652#e148652\n\nTicket Link: 03/04/2026: https://www.headfirstbristol.co.uk/whats-on/the-cube/fri-3-apr-the-children-of-mike-148653#e148653
