SUMMARY:Twelfth Night at Ashton Court Mansion
DESCRIPTION:The Oxford Rep Company brings Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night to the Ashton Court Mansion this October. \nA play about the party\, and what’s left when it ends. Set on a strange\, seductive island that never quite sobers up\, this production of Twelfth Night reimagines Illyria as the ruins of a once-glamorous celebration – a place where time blurs\, emotions heighten\, and nothing is quite as it seems. \nLit by purples and deep ocean blues\, the island pulses with the memory of music\, love\, and loss. It’s beautiful\, but it’s starting to rot. As grief crashes into desire\, and disguise becomes dangerous\, Shakespeare’s comedy reveals its darker heart. \nViola washes up not just on foreign shores\, but in a world spinning on fantasy and denial. Orsino is addicted to the idea of love. Olivia is drunk on power and heartbreak. Malvolio is humiliated beyond repair. No one is really seen for who they are – until it’s too late. \nThis is not a glittering romance. This is a world where identity is fragile\, power is performative\, and cruelty is easily mistaken for fun. A place where music is always playing\, but no one can remember the words. A Twelfth Night for anyone who’s ever loved the wrong person\, laughed at the wrong moment\, or stayed too long at a party they didn’t want to leave. \nTwelfth Night is on at Ashton Court Mansion 02 – 03 October 2025 \nTo book 02 October 2025: https://hdfst.uk/e136842\nTo book 03 October 2025: https://hdfst.uk/e136845

SUMMARY:Last and First Men by Neon Dance - Bristol Beacon
DESCRIPTION:A performance piece bringing together contemporary dance\, live music and film\, will be coming to Bristol Beacon this September. \nLast and First Men\, uses visuals from Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannson’s work of the same name. The film is based on Olaf Stapledon’s visionary 1930s sci-fi novel\, set two billion years in the future as humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. \n The film was completed by Yair Elazar Glotman after Jóhannson’s death in 2018. Glotman returns as musical director for this live performance of Johannson’s final work. \nThe show is narrated by Tilda Swinton and performed by three dancers from Swindon’s Neon Dance alongside seven musicians. \nDirection and choreography comes from Adrienne Hart with music by both Jóhann Jóhannson & Yair Elazar Glotman. \n“It feels like we’re getting fewer and fewer chances to sit and contemplate the world around us\,” Choreographer and creator Adrienne Hart said. \n“To question our existence\, in and outside of pasts and futures. We rarely get to wonder\, truly amble through the question\, why are we here? This is a work for that. We hope it offers some discomfort and some solace in this. It is not about bombarding an audience with steps\, rather\, offering them a kind of speculative feast. It’s been an absolute privilege to reimagine this work for the stage and to work with those who were part of Johannsson’s close creative circle to realise the performance alongside live score. I’ve also been able to work alongside long-time collaborators including the award winning artist Ana Rajcevic who has a deep connection to the work.” \nDancers\nKelvin Kilonzo\, Aoi Nakamura\, Fukiko Takase \nMusicians\nYair Elazar Glotman\, Else Torp & Echo Collective (Margaret Hermant\, first violin; Neil Leiter\, viola; Charlotte Danhier\, cello; Jaroslaw Mroz\, Bass; Sophie Bayet\, second violin) \nFeatured Image: Miles Hart Photography

SUMMARY:When the Morning Stars Sang (& The Angels Shouted For Joy)- Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Master-storyteller Hugh Lupton with acclaimed cellist Sarah Moody\, will be taking to the stage of Tobacco Factory Theatres this September for When The Morning Stars Sang. \nThe show has been described by previous audiences as ‘Totally spellbinding’ and ‘transcendent’. \nDemons\, archangels & djinns; hoopoes\, swallows\, fish\, donkeys and maggots; kings\, queens\, merchants\, fools and the voice from the heart of the whirlwind all contend in this rich interweaving of Apocryphal and Old Testament mystery tales drawing from Jewish\, Islamic and Christian sources.   \nAudiences will encounter Adam and Eve\, Solomon and Sheba\, Tobias and the Angel\, Job and his Comforters… stories that underpin our culture… told in the picture language of the heart\, with vigour and humour\, with rich language and deep magic. \nThis is a chance to shake off old habitual pieties and hear these ancient tales with fresh ears. \nSarah Moody’s playing is inspired by the music of all three Abrahamic traditions\, reminding us that at the core of these cultures (that have been at loggerheads for most of the last thousand years) lies a shared mythology. \nBooking details below

SUMMARY:Women Who Gave No F**ks at Tobacco Factory Theatres
DESCRIPTION:Story Jam returns to Bristol for the third year in a row\, following sell-out performances and rave reviews in 2023 and 2024. \nThe theatre company is back this month\, calling into Tobacco Factory Theatres with Women Who Gave No F**ks. \nLast time the show came to Bristol\, an audience member gave so little f**ks\, they left wearing a prop diadem. \nThe audience member had been appointed the position of Prize-Giving Godess\, an interactive role requiring the use of a crown. \n“We’re very much looking forward to bringing the show back to Bristol\,” said Lucy Lill\, one of the show’s chief storytellers. “Mainly because the audiences turn up in such numbers\, and with such enthusiasm. Even if that enthusiasm sometimes overflows into acts of theft.” \nIt’s not the first time audiences have been inspired enough to make off with props. \nIn 2023\, someone even made off with a clapometer. \nThe show is completely different every time its performed\, meaning that returning audiences won’t be bored. \nEach storyteller in the show champions a ‘great woman’ from stories of the past. Audiences then get to pick the winner. \nPrevious shows have included one-legged WW2 spy Virginia Hall and Sumerian creation goddess Tiamat. \n“Even though there’s a winner\, what audiences love about the show is they are getting to hear about all these different women\nfrom myth and history whose stories have been buried or overshadowed\, Lucy Lill continues. \n“And we get to hear about the women who have inspired our audiences – the interval is a huge celebration as we invite people to come and write all over the stage the names of the women they want everyone to know about.” \nThe company says they are looking forward to their Bristol visit\, saying there is “something special” about performances in the city. \n“Every time\, we’re surprised by the diversity of people who come\,” Lill says. \n“Audiences have included rugby fans\, students\, academics\, groups of friends on Big Nights Out\, and mums\, aunties and daughters.” \nWomen Who Gave No F*cks will be at Tobacco Factory Theatres 18 – 20 September 2025 \nBooking details below. \n
