SUMMARY:Glenside Hospital Museum - National Lottery Open Week
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 14 March is the last chance to step into Glenside Hospital Museum as part of National Lottery Open Week. \nThe event History in Your Hands\, has been running since 07 March is part of a UK-Wide event which sees hundreds of venues opening their doors with free entry or special offers. \nVisitors on Saturday can enter for free with any National Lottery ticket or scratchcard. \nGlenside Hospital Museum is run entirely by volunteers. It is giving visitors the chance to handle a straitjacket\, a deactivated electroconvulsive therapy machine\, patient artworks and Victorian medicine bottles. \nThe same building contains a secret turret room — originally the private balcony of the hospital’s most senior doctor — where visitors can take tea via a spiral staircase. And the chapel floor they walk across is the same one Sir Stanley Spencer — one of Britain’s most celebrated painters — scrubbed as a medical orderly during the First World War. \nFeatured Image: Glenside Hospital Museum – A deactivated Ectron Duopulse ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) machine from the museum’s collection\, available to handle during the ‘History in Your Hands’ experience \n\n

SUMMARY:In Hysterics - The Wardrobe Theatre
DESCRIPTION:In Hysterics is a new play by Late Shift Theatre\, exploring women’s experiences of medical misogyny. \nIt follows the parallel lives of two women\, living 100 years apart\, whose stories unfold through a series of doctor’s appointments. Set in the 1920s and the 2020s\, the play explores women’s experiences of medical misogyny\, revealing how many attitudes\, misunderstandings\, and injustices within healthcare have remained disturbingly unchanged. Drawing on the personal journeys of these two women alongside verbatim accounts from many others\, the play exposes the ongoing failure to adequately study\, listen to\, and treat women’s bodies. While addressing heavy and distressing subject matter\, In Hysterics uses a carefully comedic and farcical tone\, allowing serious issues to be confronted through humour that highlights the absurdity of a system that has failed women for over a century

SUMMARY:Life Before You - Spielman Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Life Before You is a new play written by Eva Hudson and directed by Roisin McCay-Hines. \nThe pair were inspired by their shared experiences of navigating medical misogyny and understandings of class and female identity. Both also had the same experience of being daughters of Northern Irish mothers who moved to England and raised their children here. \nLife Before You addresses women’s healthcare issues\, class and survival as well as the erasure of aging women. Looking at the fault lines between mothers and daughters\, it ask – what do we pass on and how do we escape the lives written for us? \nGráinne leaves Ardoyne\, Belfast\, for England\, chasing the promise of a better life for her daughter. She scrubs\, she bleaches\, she sacrifices— and piece by piece\, she begins to disappear. \nEimear grows up surrounded by privilege\, stepping through doors her mother could never open. But with every step forward\, she drifts further away — into another class\, another name\, another life. \nAs they clash over diverging ideas of womanhood\, what surfaces is complex and turbulent\, straining their relationships — with themselves and with each other — to breaking point. \n

SUMMARY:Ian Stone Looking For The Wow - Hen and Chicken
DESCRIPTION:Ian Stone will be back in Bristol for 2026 with Looking For The Wow. \nThe comedian has been on a sold-out tour during 2025 and is back\, this time looking for life’s missing magic. \n“There has to be more to life than the humdrum and the routine before the inevitable slide into disease\, decay\, and death. Why can’t we sneak in a hint of awesome\, a tad of amazing\, and maybe a smidge of wonderful? Where you get is your business. A forest canopy opening onto a huge vista would be enchanting for some\, but my ancestors wandered in the desert for forty years — I think we’ve been outdoors enough. Others get their fix from the spiritual\, but I’ve been harbouring a grudge against God since my mother stopped me going to Arsenal after my Barmitzvah — forty-nine years ago. “God will be watching\,” she said. Well\, at least He got to see the game. The point is\, life could be so much better — so I’m on the lookout. Come and join me on the hunt.” \nIt’s been a hectic few years for Ian\, who has taken Edinburgh by storm\, winning the Spirit of the Fringe Award. \nYou can also find Ian on his popular twice-weekly Arsenal podcast – Handbrake Off\, for The Athletic. \nFor more details about his forthcoming tour\, visit: https://www.ianstonecomedian.co.uk/ \nBristol booking details below

As day turns to night and snow begins to fall in summer\, can anyone stop the dream from turning into a nightmare? \nA Midsummer Night’s Dream will be at Bristol Old Vic from 04 – 21 March 2026 \nTickets go on sale to members from 26 June and then general sale from 03 July 2025 \nBooking info below \nHome: https://backstagebristol.com/\nBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/chopsybristol.bsky.social\nTikTok: www.tiktok.com/@chopsybristoltt\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/backstagebristol\nYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/chopsybaby

SUMMARY:Days of Significance - BOVTS - The Station
DESCRIPTION:The play forms part of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s Spring Season.\nDays of Significance – The War is Out There. The War is Here.\nWritten by Roy Williams\nDirected by Natalie Simone \nRoy Williams’s hard-hitting play\, “Days of Significance\,” is a powerful modern drama that uses a classic three-act structure to explore the volatile lives of young British people caught between two different battlegrounds. \nThe narrative follows two young soldiers\, Ben and Jamie\, and their partners\, as they prepare for and endure active service in the Iraq conflict. \nAct One is set on the streets of an urban English town\, filled with drink-fuelled brawls and sexual tension. \nAct Two shifts violently to Basra\, showing the moral compromises and dangers the soldiers face. The final act returns to England for a wedding\, revealing the devastating and complex aftermath of their tour on the soldiers and their friends back home. \nThe play fiercely tackles key themes including the cost of war on young\, often ill-prepared individuals\, the erosion of moral authority\, and the contrast between domestic and military violence\, exploring issues of prejudice\, nationalism\, and revenge. \nThe intense content\, which includes strong\, often obscene language\, explicit violence\, and mature subject matter\, means the play is recommended for mature audiences. \nIt is generally considered suitable for ages 16+. \nIt is notable that the play is an RSC-commissioned response to Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing\,” giving a classic framework to a hard-hitting contemporary narrative that critiques the naive values exported to a conflict zone.

SUMMARY:Knowle West Literacy Project - Spielman Theatre
DESCRIPTION:London\, 1950’s. D.I. Jack Payne is drafted in to investigate a murder\, this is a crime the likes of which have never been seen before and the murder scene is\, well\, rather bizarre. Jack has unconventional methods to say the least; he sees the world differently\, but his superiors and everyone around him want him to conform and do things “by the book” the way everyone else does. Jack’s unconventional approach lands him in trouble as he gets in deeper water trying to catch the murderer. But is it this very approach and Jack’s unique way of looking at the world that means he is the only one that can bring the murderer to justice? Should Jack change to fit the world\, or should the world change to fit him?  \n This new theatrical work has been co-created with young people from Knowle West. The project aims to support literacy\, creativity and confidence through the development of new theatre and has been made possible through funding from DJS Arts\, The JJ Charitable Trust\, The Jackson Family Fund and Arts Council England.
