SUMMARY:Juliet & Romeo - Bristol Old Vic
DESCRIPTION:Lost Dog dance theatre company brings Juliet & Romeo to the Bristol Old Vic this September. \nThe production reimagines the much-loved story\, exploring what happens if the star crossed lovers didn’t actually die. \nThe two-hander dance piece combines movement\, text\, drama\, dance and music in this extension of the story. \nJuliet and Romeo have grown up\, got married and moved to Paris. They have now reached their 40s with one of them having reached the point of a midlife crisis. \nHaunted by their earlier teenage selves\, they decide to confront their struggles by putting on a performance about it. \nTheir therapist tells them it’s not a good idea\, but they go ahead with it anyway. \nThe show was created by Ben Duke back in 2018. Since then\, it’s been performed over 200 times across the UK\, Europe\, Canada\, China and New Zealand. \nThis run stars Emily Terndrup as Juliet and John Kendall as Romeo. \nArtistic Director of Lost Dog Dance\, Ben Duke says: “I always hoped Shakespeare’s Juliet would wake up just a few moments earlier than she does; I know she never will but I can’t help hoping for it!  Baz Lurhman’s film came out in 1996 (30 years ago!) and made a huge impression on me.  The idea for the piece came from imagining an alternate version and\, in turn\, to encourage people to consider the nature of their own relationships.  I think we aren’t that honest about relationships and that too many stories focus on how relationships start rather than how they continue.” \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Kiota brings Blessed Hands to The Wardrobe Theatre this September. \nIt’s a solo performance exploring Sephardi Heritage\, Migration and Solidarity. \nThe show is written and performed by writer and academic Dr Michal Nahman\, based on scholarly research into Sephardi and Mizrachi foodways and identities. \nIt’s performed by Michal Nahman\, produced by Kiota and directed by Aisha Ali. \nKiota is a Bristol-based company which showcases artists from the Global Majority. \nTurkish Sephardi grandmother Savta is a ghostly figure conjuring timeless Jewish recipes\, anxieties and historical migrations. \nStanding at the intersection of nostalgia\, authenticity\, and victimhood\, Savta holds up a mirror to the Jewish eternal experience\, offering a journey filled with humor\, grief\, and reflection as she explores her past to discover the true meaning of love and global solidarity. \nThe show is told through an amalgamation of interviews and historical research\, storytelling\, comedy\, clowning\, dance and song. \nFollowing the performance\, audiences are invited to take part in a special three-course Sephardi-inspired supper club at Coexist Community Kitchen in Easton. \nDuring the event\, there will be conversations and explorations on themes of migration\, memory\, food\, family and belonging. \nIt will include a talk by Dr Michal Nahman. DESCRIPTION:Silly Serious Sessions is a weekly space for anyone who wants to express their creativity and imagination through movement and voice. The sessions offer a safe space for being playful and silly together – to be our weird wonderful selves in the spirit of playfulness! \n\n\nWhat to expect?\nEach session will be a mix of physical theatre games and exercises\, dance improvisation\, expressive art and playing creatively with voice. Expect lots of moving\, creating nonsense worlds and nonsense sounds and soundscapes – drawing from and soaring on our personal and collective imagination. \nWe will start each session with warm up games\, dive deeper into play with a few longer exercises and finish with a grounding close. No previous experience is required\, only a willingness to move and give it a go. This is a good space for someone dipping their toe into physical theater for the first time and a nice playfield for someone who has done it before. \nAbout the facilitator:\nHi I’m Nina! I’ve got naughty elves inside my heart and I would love to share their joy and mischief with you! I also wish to share my inspirations and experience I gained in my training in contemporary dance\, physical theatre\, street theatre\, music and expressive art\, and invite all those naughty elves inside you to come out and play! \nDisclaimer:\nThis is a group-based workshop — most games don’t work with just a couple of people. A group of minimum 4 people is required to run each session. DESCRIPTION:Debs Newbold comes to The Wardrobe Theatre in Bristol with DAUNTLESS: Grace O’Malley\, Pirate Queen. \nIt’s a warm welcome from the city\, for Debs’ solo show is a pirate story for 21st-century feminists. \nBristol is literally home to seafaring\, maritime history and of course pirates. \nThe infamous pirate Blackbeard was from Bristol. Parts of Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island were inspired by this very city. \nDebs’ inspiration for the show was Grace O’Malley\, or Gráinne Ní Mháille in Irish. She was born on Clare Island in Clew Bay in 1530. \nAfter stowing away on her father’s ship aged 8\, she became a multilingual\, seafaring weapons expert and notorious pirate. \nDauntless is a celebration of uproarious storytelling\, high drama and one fascinating 16th century feminist.

It tells the story of a woman who accidentally conjures a sinister alter ego. \nIn a bid to achieve her dreams of success\, she needs the alter ego to work for her between the ‘lost hours’ of midnight and six in the morning. \nProblems soon begin when the alter ego wants more time\, space and control… \nWhile They Sleep explores themes around late stage capitalism and how it traps women within a continuous cycle of abuse – but also convincing them it was their idea. \nIt’s told through physical theatre and video art. \nThe production is supported by Arts Council England as part of the UK/England Season of Culture 2025-26. \n  \n

Dave was born and grew up in Bristol. His father Norman Samuels led the famous Bristol Bus Boycott in 1963. \n

The sessions offer a safe space for being playful and silly together – to be our weird wonderful selves in the spirit of playfulness! \n\n\nWhat to expect?\nEach session will be a mix of physical theatre games and exercises\, dance improvisation\, expressive art and playing creatively with voice. Expect lots of moving\, creating nonsense worlds and nonsense sounds and soundscapes – drawing from and soaring on our personal and collective imagination. \nWe will start each session with warm up games\, dive deeper into play with a few longer exercises and finish with a grounding close. No previous experience is required\, only a willingness to move and give it a go. Along the way\, many of those complex and at times powerful arrangements have demanded every ounce of musicality and virtuosity that the band could muster – but at more reflective moments\, the true essence of Kate’s imaginative concepts have come to life with simply the voice and piano \nIt’s these jewels of the song-writing craft that the ‘Song Book’ ensemble now performs – with Matthew Bowers at the piano and Dave Roberts on bass backing the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Mandy Watson. \nThe Song Book repertoire features stunning arrangements of some lesser-known tracks as well as many of the hits – including Wuthering Heights\, Babooshka\, Hounds of Love and Cloudbusting. The sessions offer a safe space for being playful and silly together – to be our weird wonderful selves in the spirit of playfulness! \n\n\nWhat to expect?\nEach session will be a mix of physical theatre games and exercises\, dance improvisation\, expressive art and playing creatively with voice. Expect lots of moving\, creating nonsense worlds and nonsense sounds and soundscapes – drawing from and soaring on our personal and collective imagination. \nWe will start each session with warm up games\, dive deeper into play with a few longer exercises and finish with a grounding close. No previous experience is required\, only a willingness to move and give it a go. This is a good space for someone dipping their toe into physical theater for the first time and a nice playfield for someone who has done it before. \nAbout the facilitator:\nHi I’m Nina! I’ve got naughty elves inside my heart and I would love to share their joy and mischief with you! I also wish to share my inspirations and experience I gained in my training in contemporary dance\, physical theatre\, street theatre\, music and expressive art\, and invite all those naughty elves inside you to come out and play! \nDisclaimer:\nThis is a group-based workshop — most games don’t work with just a couple of people. A group of minimum 4 people is required to run each session.
