3pm Session

Absolute credit to the people who organised this event. Firstly, for the genius idea of turning The Bristol Hippodrome theatre into a gaming hub. Secondly, for one of the most well organised events I’ve ever been to.

The gaming event was put on by RePlay Bristol and divided into ticketed four hour sessions over two days. For each session, only 300 tickets were sold and two sessions were over 18s only. This worked brilliantly. Unless you were very keen to play a specific game, there was no queuing, waiting or irritatation, though some occasional pained looks from people keeping a beady eye out for the availability of favoured games.

With 100 computers and consoles to play, board games and puzzles, the four hours went by incredibly quickly.

Gamers took to the stage to play a range of consoles dating back over the last forty years. Underneath the stage was a busy Minecraft server and virtual reality machines.

As well as being able to play games including Mario, Duck Hunt and Donkey Kong, it was fascinating to see the bare bones of the Hippodrome stage devoid of scenery and show. A theatre tour of the Hippodrome is definitely added to our To-Do list.
