Micro Review: Blurillaz – Blur Tribute vs Gorillaz Tribute The Fleece
Friday of the August bank holiday weekend brought Blurillaz to The Fleece. The show is a double bill tribute with the first half dedicated to Brit pop band Blur. The second half is Grillaz, is a tribute to Gorillaz, a virtual animated band formed in the late 90s with comic book artist Jamie Hewlett and Blur front man Damon Albarn.
Gorillaz gave a stunning performance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in the summer following the release of their album The Mountain earlier in the year. The band also ran a series of dates at Copper Box Arena last year, performing the entirety of each album on consecutive nights.
It coincided with The House of Kong, an art exhibition/immersive experience concept diving into the virtual Gorillaz world.
Love for Gorillaz is at an all time high. The crowd at The Fleece this Friday was multigenerational, bringing together children, teens, seasoned fans and the Play The Ones We Know peeps.
Blurillaz, who hail from Birmingham, are both independently Blurry and Grillaz, bringing both together in a two-act performance.
The first half of the evening saw the audience delighted with some of Blur’s biggest bangers. The set list weaved together more wistful moments with the band’s top hits. The vibe of the audience meant the energy was peak as the set moved towards the likes of Parklife, Girls & Boys and Song 2.
Arguably, the most love of the night was for the Gorillaz, which was a performance on an entirely different level.
Embodying the characters of 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs, Grillaz took fans through a set bringing to life the movement, tone and musicality of the animated characters.
Clint Eastwood was an evening highlight, with the complex nuances of the song, including rap, pretty flawless.
Overall, the decently entertaining evening performance was genuinely a lot of fun, even if you only know both band’s greatest hits.
