Micro Review: Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds Live! The Concert Experience
At The Forum Bath
It was a sold-out performance and standing ovation for the concert version of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds in Bath this week.
Does it stand up to the live arena experience? Absolutely it does. This was a scaled-back version in terms of the staging. No one wants to set the glorious Art Deco auditorium of the Forum Bath on fire. So there’s no giant Tripod, fire and automation set pieces across the audience. There is video animation throughout, although plenty to see on stage from the live orchestra, band and cast.
The music was fantastic as ever. At times, the sound mix was a little uneven, but it didn’t affect the performance negatively.

There is still a huge amount of love for this concept album with its iconic imagery. It lends itself perfectly to live storytelling, really capturing the imagination. It’s a really timeless piece of live art and definitely worth seeing even if you aren’t currently a fan.
A full arena tour for the 50th anniversary is planned for 2028. Will Bristol be any closer to its own arena by then? Probably not, so here’s hoping for a Cardiff date.
