Micro Review: Manic Street Preachers Utilita Arena Cardiff

The Burger King by the bus station in Cardiff. A long gone place. A blast from the past which was noted by James Dean Bradfield at the Utilita Arena Cardiff on Wednesday evening. A place that brought back memories of early Manics days. He noted the changes he has seen over the years, changes which landed with many of the Manic Street Preachers fans in attendance.

It was a burst of nostalgia in a fantastic performance by the Manics. It’s so close to exactly thirty years since their first Cardiff performance following the release of Everything Must Go in 1996. A December gig featuring no less than Catatonia and Super Furry Animals in support.

Here in 2026, the band has still got it. Rage, politics, culture, art, musicality, alienation, despair and of course, just being pure icons.

They dipped into eras everywhere, including one of their rawest and most powerful songs Die In The Summertime from The Holy Bible.

With the ongoing rise of the extreme right and fascism and the continuing demonisation of working class people by the establishment, anthemic songs including A Design For Life and final tune If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next, shows the relevance of the band.

At a time where communities battle to keep libraries open and in every major city, fascist marches need heading off at the start, Manic Street Preachers prove they have never been more relevant.
