Bristol Choir Boy Production Scoops Awards at Black British Theatre Awards
Bristol Theatre’s acclaimed production picked up a hat-trick of awards this week
A play produced and performed in Bristol, scooped three awards at the Black British Theatre Awards this week.
Choir Boy played for a four-week limited run at Bristol Old Vic between 12 October and 11 November 2023. It was only the second time the play – by Tarell Alvin McCraney – had been performed in the UK. It also marked the first production of incoming Artistic Director for Bristol Old Vic – Nancy Medina.
The production – in association with Chuchu Nwagu productions – went down a storm with audiences and reviewers alike, immediately became a hot ticket event.
Choir Boy won Best Play award, Best Director award for Nancy Medina and Best Male Lead went to Terique Jarrett.
The winners were announced at a ceremony on Monday at the Lyceum Theatre in London.

The ‘joyous’ play is a coming of age story set in a legendary gospel choir at an elite, all-boys school in America. It features a cappella gospel hymns and spirituals mixed through the story.
Nancy Medina said of the win: “It means so much to be recognised by this peer group of Black British artists and to see Choir Boy marked in a night of celebration and reflection was truly inspiring and beautiful. It’s so rare that we can see all of ourselves in the same space and be in the majority. I am so grateful to have been part of this production; to have been trusted with the responsibility by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and to have been supported by the love, laughter and artistry of the brilliant company at every step was unforgettable”
The Black British Theatre Awards was founded in 2018 with the aim of increasing diversity within the UK theatre industry. It provides a platform for Black creatives to be recognised for their exceptional work across acting, writing, directing and technical production. This year’s winners had to be involved in productions running between 01 August 2023 to 31 July 2024.
