Campaign to Make Drama Mandatory For Key Stage 3

Drama GCSE has been steadily declining year upon year

Drama is not a standalone subject in England’s KS3 National Curriculum, despite it being so in schools in Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

This year’s GCSE results are showing a continuing downward trend of the number of pupiols going on to take Drama and other arts related subjects in years 11 and 12.

It’s something that is turning into somewhat of a campaign by ks3dramaforalluk, who have launched a campaign calling on the Government to make Drama a mandatory subject for KS3 in England.

The petition has been started by secondary school Drama teacher Laura McGibbon, who says: “We believe Drama develops essential life skills including communication, confidence, creativity, empathy, critical thinking and collaboration. These skills can support success across education, employment and everyday life.

“We feel access to Drama is currently inconsistent across schools, limiting opportunities for many students, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds.”

It’s “much more” than simply training actors, she says.

“Drama develops communication, confidence, creativity, empathy, collaboration and critical thinking, as well as providing an inclusive space for young people to find their voice.”
