Dark Comedy The Highgate Vampire Awakens In Bristol This October

A horrifying new play with ink-dark comedy comes to Tobacco Factory Theatres

The Highgate Vampire is a true story. Well, as true as one of those British paranormal cultural phenomenons right up there with the Enfield Poltergeist, Borley Rectory and more locally, The Ancient Ram Inn.

In the late 60s and into the 70s, stories of grave desecration, vandalism and witnessed paranormal activity by multiple witnesses turned into a bit of a hoo-ha which played out in the media.

The story has now been turned into a show by James Demaine and Alexander Knott of theatre company Bag of Beard. Last year it won the Stephen Joseph Award for Theatre.

Bag of Beard puts storytelling at the heart of their productions which they weave into darkly funny shows.

The Highgate Vampire is certainly that, described by the company as: “A new dark comedy that asks you to imagine, among other things, what if The Woman in Black had been performed by The Mighty Boosh?”

Alexander Knott said the incident of the Highgate Vampire is “strange, funny and genuinely fascinating”.

It’s one we’re “excited to bring to Bristol audiences,” he added.

The cast in rehearsal

Set in 1970, a demon-hunting priest and his sworn enemy – a man who is a tobacconist by day and vanquisher of the undead by night – set out to destroy something horrifying stalking the streets of London.

Always Beware the Highgate Vampire… come hear about it for yourself.

The Highgate Vampire will be at Tobacco Factory Theatres 08 – 10 October 2026
