“Darkly Funny” New Debut Show From Bristol Theatre Company

Ave Maria! will be at the Bristol Improv Theatre next month

Two Birds Theatre Company are back on the stage this summer, with a new play by Lizzie Kilbride.

The Bristol-based theatre company formed little over a year ago, but has already been picking up high praise and four and five star reviews for its first show Down To The Felt.

Ave Maria! is described by the company as a “darkly funny story” with themes of faith, identity and power.

The queer story is set in 1296. It follows a woman who is disguising herself as a male priest in order to live the life she has always wished for.

Within the strange and oppressive medieval church, Julian has built a life as a priest carefully maintained by a web of lies. But after she’s appointed bishop for the county, her story begins to unravel.

Growing whispers of a ‘woman priest’ bring local zealot Cardinal Richard to the parish to investigate, leading Julian and the church community into a series of scrapes where faith and fealty collide.

As well as writing the play, Lizzie Kilbride also co-directs with Jude Burrows.

Libby Connor and Owen Perry are co-producing with Jamie Druce as fundraising liaison.

On the design side is Eli Grundy as set designer, Lillyanna Bryan as costume designer with Tilly Muir and Beanie White as assistant costume designers. George Hamerton is the production photographer.

Ave Maria! will be at Bristol Improv Theatre 04 – 06 June 2026
