Graeae Theatre Company will be bringing their latest production – Bad Lads by Mike Kenny – to Tobacco Factory Theatres this October.
The play has been created from the testimonies of former inmates at Medomsley Youth Detention Centre in County Durham in the 1980s.
The prison was used to incarcerate young men who had been involved in petty crime. But what happened inside the walls was much worse.
The play gives voice to a group of men who have been unheard in the past and who had their lives wrecked because of a piece of government policy that many would argue was ineffective, disproportionate and lastingly detrimental.
Mike Kenny’s play uncovers the truth behind what happened to these young men, revealing how it still impacts their lives some forty years after the events and looks at a system that failed these working-class men. At a time when the cry for accountability is louder than ever; Bad Lads demands remembrance and calls for justice.
All performances will integrate British Sign Language (BSL), audio description, creative captions and will be presented in a relaxed environment.
