Glenside Hospital Museum – National Lottery Open Week

March 14
Glenside Hospital Museum

Saturday 14 March is the last chance to step into Glenside Hospital Museum as part of National Lottery Open Week.

The event History in Your Hands, has been running since 07 March is part of a UK-Wide event which sees hundreds of venues opening their doors with free entry or special offers.

Visitors on Saturday can enter for free with any National Lottery ticket or scratchcard.

Glenside Hospital Museum is run entirely by volunteers. It is giving visitors the chance to handle a straitjacket, a deactivated electroconvulsive therapy machine, patient artworks and Victorian medicine bottles.

The same building contains a secret turret room — originally the private balcony of the hospital’s most senior doctor — where visitors can take tea via a spiral staircase. And the chapel floor they walk across is the same one Sir Stanley Spencer — one of Britain’s most celebrated painters — scrubbed as a medical orderly during the First World War.
