Featured Show: The Woman In Black at Bristol Old Vic

The original and still the best theatrical horror story

Stephen Mallatratt’s stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s The Woman In Black, is a masterclass in theatrical storytelling. It features just two actors who take the audience on an unsettling and atmospheric supernatural horror.

There is of course, plenty of humour alongside jumpscares and the very strong urge as an audience member to shout at the stage “don’t go up the stairs”.

If you have a touch of echolalia, you will be repeating “It was nine-thirty on Christmas Eve” for many years to come…

The play is almost 40 years old, spending most of those years running at the Fortune Theatre in London before closing in March 2023.

Calling something a ‘must-see’ is one of the biggest clichés when writing about theatre. But really, this one is a must-see.

The Woman In Black comes to Bristol Old Vic on 21 – 25 April 2025.

If you can’t make that date, it’s also at Bath Theatre Royal 02 – 06 December 2025
