Have You Seen This Sculpture on The Elephant Pub

Did you know there’s a Bristol pub with an elephant’s head carved on the building?

Make sure you look upwards next time you’re on St Nicholas Street in Central Bristol because you might miss this glorious stone sculpture of an elephant.

The Elephant pub has been around for centuries, first opening in the 17th century on St Nicholas Street.

Come 1866, the original pub was knocked down and rebuilt as part of work to widen the street.

When it was finished, it came complete with an elephant’s head carved in stone inline with the first floor of the pub.

The Elephant has gone through many owners up to present day, notably becoming one of the city’s prominent LGBTQ+ venues during the 1970s.
