John Barrowman Camp as Christmas Playhouse Theatre Weston Super Mare
Songs, entertaining stories and plenty of sparkles in this dazzling show
John Barrowman made a very welcome second return to Weston Super Mare this year. After his hugely entertaining Laid Bare tour, he returned with new show Camp as Christmas.
The performance included carols, Christmas songs and a sprinkling of other tunes.
There were brand new stories and anecdotes. The ginger cat one is possibly one of the funniest stories told on stage.
Welsh school girl, 15-year-old Evie Williams entered a competition back in the summer for a chance to perform in the show and was elected the winner. She gave an incredible performance of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah belying her young age.
Barrowman always ends shows with I Am What I Am, which he did once again despite being told it wasn’t festive. But as the entertainer knows his audience well, the show ended on a bang with the La Cage aux Folles classic.
Because it’s a big number for the LGBT+ community, which Barrowman has been a vocal campaigner and supporter of, the entertainer gave permission for people to film the final number because its message was so important.
John Barrowman’s career has been wide and varied. As an actor, he is probably most known for his role as the iconic Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood.
His professional career actually began in theatre. Throughout Camp as Christmas, the stage is like his natural habitat. He knows exactly how to entertain an audience. And, that famous theatrical voice is still going strong now.
There’s lots of festive sparkle and cheer throughout the show and with Barrowman’s charisma, energy and with his natural hijinks, nobody does it better.
