Matt Smith An Enemy of the People at Stage Door of The Duke of York’s Theatre
Matt Smith comes to stage door following An Enemy of the People in London
Coming towards the final week of its run, An Enemy of the People is a disturbingly relevant play that is heavily reminiscent of the ‘toxic swamp’ of Bristol’s own mayoral system.
Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play has been brought up-to-date by Thomas Ostermeier with Florian Borchmeyer and headlines Matt Smith as Dr. Thomas Stockmann.
Its serious message over farcical political comedic moments rings all to close to home. Bristolians voted to end the city’s mayoral system this May, which will see an end to rubber-stamped Cabinet meetings and a move towards a committee system..
The second half of the show brought the audience into public forum through a town hall meeting. The floor was thrown open for people to contribute their own perspective to themes raised during the show.
Following the end of the performance, cast stopped to sign programmes at the busy stage door.
