Misplaced Theatre Stages Rehearsed Reading Of Inferna By Madison Cole
The Bristol company presents a rehearsed reading of Cole’s new play at the Alma Tavern Theatre
Bristol company, Misplaced Theatre, are staging a rehearsed reading of a brand new play by up and coming playwright Madison Cole.
Inferna, is inspired by true events. It’s set in Australia in 1962 and follows the experience of 15-year-old Calynn who is pregnant. Her hyper religious mother sends her to a church-run maternity asylum, forcing her to carry on with the pregnancy.
It is her roommate at the asylum – Daya – who helps her see the reality of her situation.
Meanwhile, asylum nurse Ana wrestles with the morality of her position, against the advice of tyrannical co-worker Eris.
Back home, Calynn’s best friend Alessia and boyfriend James desperately try to find out what has happened to her. As Harriet turns to alcohol, Calynn’s little sister Cate is left to bear the weight of her fractured family and self-destructing mother.
The play explores themes of bodily autonomy as well as celebrating survivors at a time when a person’s right to choose seems to be eroding further as each day passes.
The rehearsed reading of Inferna takes place at the Alma Tavern Theatre on Wednesday 11 September 2024
