Preview: Princess Sparkles Comes To The Wardrobe Theatre
It’s time to get ready for the birthday party entertainment
If you’ve ever been to a children’s birthday party, have you considered the plight of the entertainer? For it is only those with a brave heart that make a living in this job.
Lily Maryon is one of those who has trodden this path. One laden with exploding balloons, smeared cake and 30 kids out for mayhem and blood.
This is where we meet Princess Sparkles. She invites the audience to step into the role of children at a birthday party – whether they are ready for it or not.
Creator of the show, Lily Maryon, has staged work in the alternative comedy scene across the UK and internationally.
Princess Sparkles is her debut solo show and promises to be an absolute blast. Previous audiences have praised it for its humour and astute observations. It played The Wardrobe Theatre in Bristol last year ahead of a run at Edinburgh.
The show is structured around a children’s birthday party with all the familiar nostalgic favourites to cause tears and tantrums.
Princess Sparkles herself is a chaotic entertainer, barely holding everything together. It all starts off with plenty of fun, but its character study reveals the emotional strain underneath.
The show is performed through character comedy, clowning and audience interaction. It is inspired by her real experiences as a children’s entertainer and includes verbatim moments from some of the parties she has run.
One such scathing blow was landed by a child at a party attended by David Cameron. She was called an “out of work actor” who was “paid to entertain me”.
The production has been developed in collaboration with director Holly Meechan. Her background in clowning and improv as well as creating immersive theatre has been “instrumental” in shaping both the narrative arc, physicality and audience connection.
The show has also been supported by Stepping Out Theatre Company and features music composition by Jack Drewry.
Princess Sparkles is on at The Wardrobe Theatre Wednesday 24 June 2026
