Review: The Children of Mike at The Cube

Contains the best performance of a chicken on stage

Worms Theatre Company returns to the stage with The Children of Mike, which is currently on at the Cube.

It’s an original piece of theatre with Laura Singer, Genna Corlett, Teddy Monroe, Laura Ollerton and Laurence Tuck making up both cast and creatives.

The theatre company was founded by Teddy Monroe in 2021, aiming to bridge theatre with activism to effect social change.

The sense of challenging people to look at the world around them was keenly weaved through a series of mini stories throughout The Children of Mike. What makes us who we are – bacteria? The dictatorship of time. There was food chain ethics. How we are married to our phones and miss the grandeur of the natural world around us. Our historical and contemporary appropriation of other countries’ industry in our British identity.

The Children of Mike itself is a clever word play which opens the show and brings it full circle at the close.

The show at times is quite profound. The surrealist nature of some clowning moments was a bit baffling. The humour, however, really lands with the dystopian ads for things like fresh air subscriptions and dating apps for average people.

Laurence Tuck should receive a commendation for what is possibly one of the best performances of a chicken seen on stage.

The Children of Mike will be at The Cube on Friday 03 April and PRSC on Sunday 05 April 2026
