The Dance of Uncertainty Raises Concerns Over Arts Cuts
Bristol theatre charity warns that funding cuts will impact on vital arts support
A Bristol arts organisation is staging a performance this week to raise concerns about the effects of funding cuts in the sector.
Many Minds will be at Arnos Vale Cemetery on the 17 and 19 of December 2024 with The Dance of Uncertainty.
It’s a participatory performance about the instability of the industry in Bristol.
“Cuts across the arts and social sectors have meant that organisations like Many Minds, who provide access to the arts for a wide range of people have been struggling to stay afloat,” Many Minds Executive Director, Olivia Ware explains.
“It’s devasting to see so many arts charities disappear at a time when they are needed the most.”
Many Minds is a mental health and performance charity aiming to empower people through creativity and performance.
The charity says The Dance of Uncertainty is a performance to ‘understand and process’ the feelings and emotions around arts cuts as well as the ‘anticipatory grief’ about something that may no longer exists. It will also be celebrating the joy it creates right now.
Funding cuts by both Bristol City Council as well as the Arts Council England (ACE) National Portfolio, has created a crisis in the arts. It’s destabilized the industry which has led to crowdfunding for some venues and events to continue their work.
Many Minds Artistic Director, Viki Browne adds: “Creativity is the backbone of culture, innovation and wellbeing, and essential human beings to survive and thrive. More than ever before we are losing grassroots organisations that make creative and art-making it something that anyone can access.”
The Dance of Uncertainty takes place at Arnos Vale Cemetery on 17 and 19 December 2024
