This Autumn Sees WhimsiCo’s New Take On Frankenstein Come To The Bath Stage

The show will be at The Rondo Theatre

A brand-new retelling of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will be taking to the Bath stage this November.

Mary’s Frankenstein has been created by WhimsiCo. It’s a South West based theatre company that has gained a reputation for merging strong storytelling with music and fresh new takes on stories we may already know.

WhimsiCo was originally co-founded by Bath Spa University graduates Lottie Dance and Ewan Wyatt, with Morgan Waters and Charlotte Spiller recently coming on board the team.

The theatre company aims to create stories that take us back to the “childhood wonder” of bedtime stories.

Creating new work, as well as breathing new life into the classics, WhimsiCo spins tales of magic, nostalgia and whimsy.

Escape to Wonderland, was the company’s debut show in 2023. Since then, they have collaborated with folk duo Humm to create Grimm, a “music-driven” journey through old fairytales and folk music.

Last year, their gothic horror The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde which took an electrifying new feminist slant met acclaim.

Continuing with gothic horror, this November sees the theatre company create a new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Mary’s Frankenstein interweaves the Haunted Summer of 1816 with the full story of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature.

WhimsiCo says the piece of theatre is about “grief, ambition, artistic creation, and the terrible responsibility of bringing something to life.”

Award-winning Brodie Marshall whose work is influenced by nature, history and folklore has composed an original score for the show.

“You asked me for a ghost story. Here is one.”

1816. The year without a summer.

The sun has vanished, the rain will not stop, and five young writers are trapped inside Villa Diodati: Mary Godwin, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, Claire Clairmont, and John Polidori. To pass the storm-dark nights, Byron proposes a ghost story competition, and Mary begins to write the story that will become Frankenstein.

As the storm outside rages, Mary’s imagination brings Victor Frankenstein and his abandoned Creature to life, blurring the line between the Villa and Mary’s created world…

The cast includes Charlotte Spiller, Laurence Tuck, Ethan John Parker, Douglas Murdoch and Maya Hingorani.

Mary’s Frankenstein is at The Rondo Theatre 11 – 14 November 2026
