This brand new event will be honouring the legacy of the Windrush generation. It will be at the Bristol Beacon in June.

Windrush – The Journey. A Concert Tour, will be with a blend of classical music, steel pan, jazz and blues. It’s comprised of work from Black composers Chevalier de Saint George and Richard Thompson. It also includes the premier of new commission Windrush Opera composed by Des Oliver with Libretto by Edson Burton.

As well as the live music event, there will be an accompanying immersive exhibition, showcasing the contributions of Black British composers. It will also include oral histories recorded with local Windrush communities in each location. The exhibition will include listening posts, curated photographs and personal stories.

The exhibition will be taking place in the Sound Lounge of the Beacon, which is free to enter and welcomes visitors dropping in during opening hours.

Young children take part in a travelling song book session

The third part of the event will be the Windrush Travelling Songbook. This is a digital archive of original music written by children inspired by real-life oral histories and stories.

Artistic Director of Pegasus Opera Company, Alison Buchanan said: “Our Windrush Concert, Exhibition and Workshops are not merely a celebration of history, but a call to action for inclusivity and representation in the arts. By amplifying the voices of Black classical composers and honouring the resilience of the Windrush generation, we aim to inspire a new era of diversity and excellence in classical music.”

The tour will be coming to Lantern Hall of the Bristol Beacon from Tuesday 20 June – Saturday 22 June 2024.
