Spotlight: BOVTS Summer Festival – The Étienne Sisters/dirty butterfly Double Bill

World class drama school platforms latest grads

Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s annual Summer Festival launches this week. The event showcases the exceptional work of its graduating students.

A series of theatre productions will be staged in the Weston Studio of Bristol Old Vic across the next four weeks.

Graduating theatre design students will be exhibiting their work in Sparks in July.

The Summer Festival features theatrical performances from its 3rd year Professional Acting students.

Each play on the festival bill has been chosen by the theatre’s Artistic Director Emma Callander.

They are directed by one of the school’s MA Drama Directing students with the design from those finishing the MA Performance Design.

The costumes are made by the BA Costume students with the lighting, sound, scenic construction, prop-making and statement management by BA Production Arts students.

Week Two Spotlight…

The Étienne Sisters by Ché Walker is taking place next week. It’s a play with songs following two sisters grieving their mother’s death. It’s at this point their estranged third sister blasts back into their lives. The play brings together themes of grief, sisterhood, generational trauma and identity.

The play is directed by Elena Wolfson with design by Alexandra Hall.

Actors Akua Mensah plays Tree, Mirelle Gipson is Ree and Tobi Grace is Bo.

Debbie Tucker Green’s dirty butterfly is the second play of the evening.

Three people are interconnected through paper thin walls in this play with themes of domestic violence voyeurism, power and guilt.

dirty butterfly is directed by Micha Mirto with design by Liv Jackson.

The cast is Violet Harvey as Jo, Elise Ria Harrison as Amelia and Nathaniel Abdo as Jason.

The Étienne Sisters and dirty butterfly will be in the Weston Studio of Bristol Old Vic 28 – 30 May 2026
