BAOS’ Musical Theatre Revue Opens
The Bristol company is back on stage with a brand new revue
What makes a hero? And is every villain really as wicked as they seem? It’s the question Bristol’s oldest amateur theatre company will be answering with their musical theatre revue this week.
Bristol Amateur Operatic Society (BAOS) is back on stage with Heroes, Villains and Everything In Between, exploring Virtue & Villainy in the musical theatre world.
The company has been staging shows in the city for over 130 years. For Virtue & Villainy, they will be bringing audiences a rich mix of our familiar favourites as well as treating us to hidden gems from lesser- known shows.
The company invites the audience to explore, through song, the nature of the blurred boundaries between our complex theatrical heroes and villains and their relationship with good and evil.
BAOS says that the show playfully challenges the labels we give characters. When we think of our favourite characters, those considered heroes have their flaws, whereas those who are the supposed villain usually have the most compelling stories – and the best songs.
“Virtue & Villainy is a real celebration of everything we love about musical theatre,” Amber Mears-Brown, Chair of BAOS (Adults) said.
“There’s something particularly fun about exploring characters who aren’t quite as heroic or villainous as they first appear, and we’ve got a fantastic mix of songs that audiences might know alongside some brilliant surprises.
“We’re incredibly proud of the talent and dedication within our society. Community theatre plays such an important role in Bristol’s cultural life, and we’d love to welcome both familiar faces and people discovering BAOS for the first time.”
Audiences should expect an entertaining evening created for both musical theatre enthusiasts as well as newcomers to the genre. BAOS has experience of staging musical theatre for local audiences dating back to 1894.
As well as staging musicals and revues, the charity has recently expanded into running a musical theatre choir for current members and newcomers looking to sing musical theatre songs in a fun and relaxed environment.
