Bristol Improv Theatre Permanently Closes
In a devastating blow to the Bristol theatre scene, the Board of Trustees of Bristol Improv Theatre have announced today that the theatre has closed with “immediate effect”.
The closure of theatres and arts venues is a growing issue across the country right now. Just last week the Taunton Brewhouse had been the latest to announce its closure. Just days later it’s the turn of Bristol Improv Theatre.
Back in 2024, the future of the Bristol Improv Theatre had been under threat. A huge campaign and fundraiser was launched. It ultimately allowed the venue to keep running until now.
The Trustees have said that despite many people expressing a “desire” to help save the theatre, that this time a fundraising campaign would not be enough.
In a public statement, the Board of Trustees said: “We know that many people have expressed a desire to help save the BIT, and we are deeply grateful for that generosity and support. Sadly, the financial circumstances mean that a further fundraising campaign would not be sufficient to secure the theatre’s future. The decision to close has therefore been made, and no further fundraising campaign is planned.”
The sudden closure will come as a shock to those who are expecting to see a show, stage shows or run or attend other activities at the venue.
The theatre said “further information is expected to be communicated to those affected within the next weeks”.
The closure is due to the theatre’s finances which have been “precarious for a long time”. The arts organisation has had “very limited financial reserves”. This has made the theatre “vulnerable” when “unexpected pressures” have occurred, or there’s been a shortage of income as well as the overall increase of operating costs.
An “enormous amount” of goodwill from those directly involved with the theatre – as well as its community – had allowed the theatre to remain running.
But, a professional review of the theatre’s finances and the options available to it meant that its future was found to be “unsustainable”.
The Board of Trustees paid tribute to everyone who had been involved with the theatre over the years, including volunteers, audiences, staff and creatives. “Thousands of friendships, memories and moments have been created here,” the Board said.
They added: “We also know that for some people the Bristol Improv Theatre is more than a place they visit, it’s an important part of their social, creative and professional lives. The suddenness of this closure makes that loss especially difficult, and we are very conscious of the impact it will have across the community.”
“We are enormously grateful to everyone who has given their time, energy, creativity, care and love to this place.
“The BIT may be closing, but the community it created lives on across Bristol. People will keep making things together, performing together and building new spaces for improv and comedy in the city. That is part of the legacy of the Bristol Improv Theatre.”
