Bristol Writer Behind New Beatrix Potter Musical

A Bristol writer and theatre maker has adapted one of Beatrix Potter’s much loved stories for the stage.

The Tailor of Gloucester will be part of the 160th anniversary celebrations of Beatrix Potter and will take to the stage of Farnham Maltings this Christmas.

Bristol-based Alex Kanefsky is the writer of the bold new musical adaptation, working alongside Olivier Award-winning lyricist Darren Clark.

The Tailor of Gloucester takes the world of Potter’s mice and brings it up-to-date for today’s young audiences.

The adaptation is told by four actors through a live soundtrack of rock and pop music, puppetry and theatrical storytelling.

The show’s Executive Producer Katy Potter says: “We’ve been interested in developing this story into a theatre adventure for a while, and the 160th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth felt like the perfect time to bring it to the stage. We’ve taken the familiar world of the tailor and his sewing mice and given it a contemporary twist, bringing fashion, branding and social media into their world and using live rock and pop music to tell the story.”

Alex Kanefsky is the writer behind a great number of shows. Recently, acclaimed musical Cable Street – for which he was writer – ran for two completely sold-out runs at the Southwark Playhouse – both Borough, then at Elephant.

It then had another sold out run at at Marylebone Theatre in London.

The Tailor of Gloucester will be at Farnham Maltings 11 – 24 December 2026
