Front Room Theatre Up For National Award

The Weston Super Mare theatre is one of 46 venues to make it to the final awards ceremony

A South West theatre has been nominated for a national theatre award for making outstanding contributions to the UK’s culture.

The Front Room Theatre in Weston Super Mare has been put forward for an award at the very first Great British Theatres Awards.

Since opening at the end of 2022, the theatre has firmly placed itself on the south west fringe theatre map, attracting national and regional touring productions.

It’s one of many venues across the country creating theatre spaces that support both local artists and communities to access theatre and creative opportunities.

“The Great British Theatres Awards finalists represent the greatest cultural spaces and inspiring people this country has to offer,” CEO of Theatres Trust Joshua McTaggart says.

“Theatres Trust knew there was a need to celebrate these theatres and the people who keep them buzzing, but the number of nominations was truly overwhelming. The judges had an incredibly challenging time choosing the finalists, and I want to extend my congratulations to every one of them. I can’t wait to celebrate our Great British Theatres in style this November.”

There were nearly 200 initial nominations from venues and communities across the country. These have been whittled down into 46 contenders across ten categories.

Front Room Theatre is up for the category Great Found Space against competition The Dipping House in Stoke-On-Trent, The Horton in Epsom, Lower Marsh Arts Club in London and Nyth in Bangor.

All of the venues in the category have had former lives. These include the location of a former restaurant, a pottery shed, a redundant church, a historic chapel and a greengrocer.

The new theatre awards ceremony comes as part of Theatres Trust’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The organisation champions the future of live performance by protecting and supporting excellent theatre buildings that meet the needs of their local communities.

The winners will be announced at the Great British Theatres Awards ceremony at Central Hall in Westminster on Monday 02 November 2026.
