The premiere of a brand new piece of writing will be taking place in the Weston Studio of Bristol Old Vic next month.
Cheeky Little Brown, is from tiata fahodzi, a British African heritage contemporary theatre company who have worked alongside co-producing partners Bristol Old Vic and Belgrade Theatre to bring the show to the stage.
Tiajna Amayo is Lady, in this one-person story, which follows the fall out of a failed night out. Delving into friendship and queer heartbreak, the show is described as ‘part drama, part musical’ brought together with a playlist of new music as well as known songs.
Writer Nkenna Akunna describes the play as a ‘ode to your early twenties’, saying ‘ It’s a story about a young woman’s resistance to change in the people and the city she calls home, and ultimately her journey toward a new beginning.’
Cheeky Little Brown will be the first co-production in the Weston Studio since Artistic Director Nancy Medina took over the reins from Tom Morris.
“I fell in love with Nkenna’s lead character the first moment I read about her messy, human life with all its beautiful failings, humour and honesty,” Medina says.
“To platform a Black, Queer female voice at this moment is so exciting. I feel our Weston Studio theatre is a space for supporting and showcasing new writing and new talent from a multitude of voices – a space to tell stories that will connect with you.”
Cheeky Little Brown will be in the Weston Studio of Bristol Old Vic from Thursday 21 September 2023 to Saturday 14 October 2023
