Encounters Film Festival 2024 Cancelled

Bristol film festival announces sudden cancellation

Hugely popular Bristol event Encounters Film Festival, has been cancelled in what would have been its thirtieth year.

The event had be due to go ahead in September.

The cancellation has come due to the charity missing out on funding streams that had previously been available to them. This year’s festival also had higher projected costs.

The Board of Trustees for Encounters Festivals Ltd released a statement this morning saying that cultural industries were collectively having to operate in an ‘increasingly challenging climate’.

The festival said that since 2023, they were no longer able to access European funding due to Brexit. They also lost funding through changes to the BFI funding strategy.

In a further blow, Bristol City Council also changed the way it supports and funds arts and culture organisations in the city, with the festival losing out. Severe funding delays led to a protest outside of the Council House last year.

The charity’s Board of Trustees said: ‘We are deeply sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience this creates for everyone who is connected to and participating in the festival. We will be writing to and refunding everyone who has made submissions, please bear with us while we work to carry this out.

‘We are in the process of working with our Board and stakeholders to reflect on what happens next for Encounters. We appreciate your patience while we work on this, and we will let you know what decisions are made in due course.’
