Enjoy Some Seasonal Shakespeare This Christmas With The Tempest

Audiences can expect to be immersed in a magical world with Kelvin Players this December

A warm and tropical location is ideal for this dismal weather, so prepare to be transported somewhere sunny with The Tempest.

“Our production of The Tempest is designed to make the audience feel they have stepped into another world from the moment they enter the theatre,” director Tim Whitten says.

“We have an immersive set, magical effects, puppet monsters, ambient sounds, music, songs and dance.”

The play is directed by both Katie Kneen and Tim Whitten. They were keen to stage a “faithful” retelling of Shakespeare’s popular play. Audiences can also expect some “fresh new spins”

The production will be told through physical theatre, puppetry and song. The mystical island will be exactly that – on a real sandy beach.

Director Katie Kneen adds: “It is funny, moving, gripping, and at times even a little bit scary. What better way to spend a cold and dark winter’s night, than on a warm and magical fantasy island, with characters we hope you will come to understand, empathise with, and love as much as we do?”

Both directors champion the cast, calling them “incredible” with some “serious talent”.

Steve Graham takes the role of Prospero alongside Ryan McKenzie as Ariel and Pete Blacow as Caliban.

The Tempest follows the fortunes of the survivors of a shipwreck. They find themselves marooned on a remote and magical island ruled over by sorcerer Prospero.

Unfortunately, Prospero has beef with some of those survivors. Shakespeare weaves us a tale of revenge, freedom, love and betrayal – as well as love and hope.

The Tempest will be at Kelvin Players on Gloucester Road 02 -06 December and 09 – 13 December 2026
