The Ocean Can Be A Bridge – Alma Tavern Theatre

October 7 - October 10
The Ocean Can Be A Bridge by Dave Samuels and Richard Bradbury

Frederick Douglas, escaped slave and leading abolitionist has arrived in Bristol in 1846 as part of a speaking tour of the UK.

As is Bristol’s reputation, West Country campaigners for the abolition of slavery have become noted internationally for taking action.

However, with Douglass’ arrival tensions grow between those who believe in radical direct action and those who favour more moderate approaches.

Caught between his political commitments as well as his personal life, Douglass finds his own happiness could tear apart the very movement he leads.

The Ocean Can Be A Bridge is a new play co-written by Richard Bradbury and Dave Samuels. Dave was born and grew up in Bristol. His father Norman Samuels led the famous Bristol Bus Boycott in 1963.
