Featured Show: Shirley Valentine at the Alma Tavern Theatre
Emma Smart returns to the Clifton theatre in Willy Russell’s iconic play
We can’t think of anyone better to take on the role of Shirley Valentine than Emma Smart. She’s a marvellous local actor with a real talent handling strong female characters that demand both humour and drama.
She returns to the Alma Tavern Theatre this June, exactly two years on from her fabulous performance in Softsod Productions’ Mother – which she subsequently performed at Edinburgh in 2024.
South west based theatre company ProAct Theatre, brings Willy Russell’s iconic show to the Clifton theatre this June. It’s directed by Steve Woolley and produced by Andi Ford.
The one-woman play follows Shirley Valentine. She’s a middle-aged, working class woman finding her life stuck in a rut. She feels unappreciated by her family.
Her best friend wins a holiday for two in Greece, which Shirley jumps at the chance to go on.
Whilst there, she rediscovers her love of life and decides not to return.
Director Steve Woolley says the story being told still “resonates deeply” today.
“She’s every woman who’s ever questioned her place, her worth, or the life she’s built,” he says.
Shirley Valentine will be at the Alma Tavern Theatre from 10-14 June 2025.
