Featured Show: The Wheel of Nouns at The Wardrobe Theatre

Comedy Cabaret asking what is gender anyway? comes to Old Market theatre

Stand-up, theatre and a big spinning game show wheel merges together in comedy cabaret The Wheel of Nouns.

In this show, The Gender Fairy invites audience members to explore gender and identity to have their own gender “transed” in a ‘silly’ and ‘low stakes’ way.

Can any noun be a gender? As the wheel spins and the game progresses, cracks start to show in The Gender Fairy’s plan.

The show is light-hearted, presented in an accepting and safe environment to explore issues around gender and queerness.

The idea for the show came after someone accidentally asked Hook – creator of the show – “What are your nouns?” instead of pronouns.

“Pronouns are useful tools,” Hook says, “but when it comes to describing who we are, pronouns are a bit limited. Nouns on the hand…now there’s room to play.”

Hook is a trans, non-binary and neurodivergent ‘mythical creature’ and cabaret artist.

Hook’s passion for subverting audience expectations using games and interaction is at the heart of the work they create.

“I wanted to create a show that talked about gender and identity in a way that was fun and accessible for people who think about gender a lot and people who don’t really think about it at all,” Hook continues.

The Wheel of Nouns will be at The Wardrobe Theatre on 04 June 2025
