HMV Nipper Logo Was Real Dog From Bristol

World famous dog was born in Bristol and lived in Montpelier

Nipper is one of the most iconic dogs in the world. He’s known as the face of music store HMV, but did you know he was born in Bristol?

The much loved Nipper logo came from a painting by Francis Barraud, the brother of Nipper’s original owner – Mark Henry Barraud.

Mark Henry Barraud was a stage set designer for the former Prince’s Theatre on Park Row – the location which the Bristol statue can be found.

He brought the dog home to Banner Road in Montpelier as the family pet.

Nipper died just ten years later in 1895.

The famous painting of the dog looking into a gramophone was painted by Barraud in1898, three years after the dog’s death.

The original painting featured the dog listening to an Edison-Bell cylinder phonograph. When The Gramophone Company founder and manager William Berry Owen was shown the painting, he requested the cylinder machine painted out and replaced with a Berliner disc gramophone.

Nipper was used on the company’s sound equipment from 1909 and then His Master’s Voice (HMV) record label in 1909.
