Micro Review: Melanie Martinez O2 London
Why it’s worth making the trek from Bristol to one of her concerts
Hades is an alt pop music album that weaves together complex dystopian themes challenging power structures, control and corruption. As with previous albums, it’s highly theatrical which translates to live music events brilliantly.
It’s the fourth album from the singer, who has created a progressive narrative structure linking them all together.
Melanie Martinez is the design lead, collaborating with other creatives to bring to life the character of Circle.
The costumes featured stunning work by Valériane Venance and Lisa Jarvis. Asher Levine created the custom Weight Watchers gown that features an opening chamber with organs that can be removed and replaced.
Martinez is almost entirely unique as a music artist who conjures entire universes in this way. The closest other creative who has done something similar would be Jeff Wayne with his musical version of The War of the Worlds.
The live performance of Hades is even better than the album. On stage, it has a strong vision and performed brilliantly by Martinez with precision backing dancers.
On stage, the creative elements come together to make this highly charged political performance.
It’s really worth attending one of her concerts to appreciate as a gorgeous theatrical performance even if you’re not a fan of her music.
