Review: Any Objections at The Wardrobe Theatre
Gentle comedy with alt-harp beats – Any Objections? None at all
With two debut shows sold out well in advance, it heralded good things to come, with Scarlett Smith’s debut show Any Objections.
Smith describes herself as an electro-acoustic alt-harpist and comedian.
From Debussy, Satie, Carol of the Bells, Dr Dre and even the iconic main theme from Jurassic Park, Scarlett shows us what the harp can really do.

She is an in-demand wedding harpist. This is not just due to her musical abilities, but her abilities to take even the most well known piece of music and turn it on its head, developing it in fresh ways.
She does this through building rich layers of looping. It’s impressive and entertaining. A careful balance of music interspersed with funny tales about wedding experiences with gentle and sometimes surreal comedy makes this an endearing performance.
There is even audience participation inviting us to work out which object was used in Guess the Glissando.
“I don’t get many repeat customers,” she tells the audience. There’s always funerals though, as she performs a beautifully morose Wagner in a minor key, which had been used for a wedding in a grave yard.
Alongside funny stories, she also touches on the heteronormativity of the wedding industry
Finally, she brings the show to a close with a fun song about being happy, silly and unique.
Any Objections is an absolutely charming show, bundled with beautiful music and heartwarming fun. It makes you want to get married for the sheer joy of having her attend as your looping electro harp player.
This absolutely charming show is a bundle of heartwarming fun.
