Space Shanty M Shed – Immersive Experience Opens This July

New immersive experience runs at M Shed through summer holidays

A new interactive installation will be running at M Shed this summer. Space Shanty will transform M Shed into a maze of interactive installations, digital artworks and historical artifacts. The experience has been inspired by the city’s historical connections with the sea, celebrating maritime heritage whilst also uncovering lesser known connections to the cosmos.

Visitors should also expect a hands-on making area with interactive elements, bringing them into a fully immersive and celestial experience.

Bemmie the Ratronaut is Bristol’s first Space Rat and features at the heart of the story. With a Bristolian accent, Bemmie takes people on a journey from Bristol’s ships to exploring distance planets. The story is a blend of fact and fantasy told through video, audio and AR.

The experience has been commissioned by Dream Place and created by D-Unit with Bristol-based Megan Broadmeadow the lead artist on the project.

Megan has a background working in installation, video VR and digital technologies. For Space Shanty, she also worked with Bristol Museums and Aerospace Bristol to create the story.

Megan describes the experience as a ‘retelling’ of Bristol’s past in a way that’s never been seen before.

“We’ve crafted an experience that not only pays homage to Bristol’s maritime roots but also explores its surprisingly rich connections to the stars above,” Megan says.

“Space Shanty’ is a testament to Bristol’s enduring spirit of exploration and creativity.”

Space Shanty will be at M Shed from 18 July – 01 September 2024
