Spine-Tingling Ghost Stories At Bristol Old Vic Ahead Of Halloween

Don’t waste time with endless scrolling through streaming platforms for scary stories this October. The Weston Studio is where it’s at this month

It’s the time of year where temperatures drop, there’s a chill in the air and night falls fast.

It’s perfect for a season of spine-tingling tales. Step forward Even More Ghost Stories by Candlelight, which will be in The Weston Studio of Bristol Old Vic this month.

Building on its previous sell-out successes, It brings audiences fresh frights with four brand new stories – all to the flickering of candlelight.

This year the stories and writers are:

The White Horse by Florence Espeut-Nickless
Cold Oak Lane by Simon Longman
The Takeover by Anne Odeke
The Consequence of Diving Lotts by Rosa Torr

The show is directed by Pentabus’ Artistic Director Elle While with Dramaturg by HighTide’s Artistic Director Clare Slater.

Florence Espeut-Nickless, an exciting theatre maker right here in the South West returns to Bristol Old Vic once again. She spent last year at the theatre on residency as part of the Peggy Ramsay/Film Four Awards.

Florence was also writer of the last year’s Christmas sell-out show – Little Red (& Winter Other Tales).

Anne Odeke is currently up for four prizes, one of which is Best Playwright at the Black British Theatre Awards taking place later this month.

Her play Princess Essex, is described as a ‘riotous’ and ‘satirical comedy’ based on the true story of the first woman of colour to enter a beauty pageant in the UK.

Simon Longman is a former Pentabus Writer-in-Residence. He also holds the 49th George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright and has previously won the Channel 4 Playwrights’ Scheme.

Rosa Torr makes up the fourth playwright. Torr, a writer, producer and dramaturg, is the founding member of Dakota Collective and an alumni of HighTide’s Writers Group.

“Ghosts don’t always stay in the past…” HighTide warns its audience. Writers for the show worked with Olivier-nominated illusionist John Bulleid for on-stage creepy effects.

He’s designed and created illusions and magic for theatre – including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre in London’s West End.

Even More Ghost Stories By Candlelight is currently on tour, calling into The Weston Studio of Bristol Old Vic 21 – 25 October 2025
