Taunton Brewhouse Theatre To Close
The Taunton Brewhouse theatre will permanently close at the end of October.
The venue has been experiencing a ‘prolonged period of challenging trading conditions’. This has been due to rising operating costs and fluctuating audience numbers. The charity does not hold “sufficient” reserves to absorb its losses in such a trading environment.
The closure is part of a widespread issue in the UK theatre, arts and culture industry. Venues are closing or under threat of closure due to escalating operating costs.
The theatre is owned by Somerset Council and operated by charity Taunton Theatre Association Ltd. It receives funding from Taunton Town Council.
The charity says that after 13 years of operating the theatre, they will cease on the same day Taunton Brewhouse closes. The decision came after “exhausting all possible alternatives.”
All performances and events taking place through October will go ahead as planned. There are still tickets available for some shows which can be booked online.
Chair of Trustees, Val Hammond said: “This is an incredibly difficult moment for everyone connected to TTA. We are immensely proud of what we have achieved together and deeply grateful to our staff, volunteers, donors, and partners who have stood with us over the years.
“Although this chapter is closing, the legacy of our work will live on through the lives we have touched. The theatre building remains in the ownership of Somerset Council, and we hope that, in due course, a new team of enthusiasts will bring the vision and energy needed to reopen it. I believe we are all united in thinking it inconceivable that Taunton should be without a public theatre.”
