The Thekla Up For Live Award
The Bristol music venue is up for an industry award this December
Many Bristolians will have memories of heady nights at the Thekla, one of the city’s most unique live music and club venues. The ship will be marking 40 years in the city next year. With a new hull and refurbishment just a couple of years ago, it is looking shipshape for another 40 years of being a big part of the city’s music scene.
The venue is up for Grassroots Champion of the year in the national music industry Live Awards 2023. The winners of awards being presented at an event London on 12 December 2023.
It’s up against Amazing Grace, London, The Boileroom, Guildford, Bootleg Social, Blackpool, The Bunkhouse, Swansea, The Fighting Cocks, Kingston, The Fire Station, Sunderland and Rescue Rooms, Nottingham.
The venue has come from being a submerged cargo ship through an underground nightclub to the backbone of the drum and bass music scene in the city.
This year it’s seen performances from the likes of Biig Piig, Black Honey, Lottery Winners, Bully, Ariel Posen and Do Nothing.
Next year it’s looking forward to seeing gigs by Bdrmm, Panchiko, Blonde Redhead, Militarie Gun and Grove.
“2023 has been a great year for us,” Thekla’s general manager Alex Black said.
“We’ve had some fantastic breakthrough artists on the ship and have seen some familiar faces. We recently hosted a hometown band selling out a venue of this size for the first time and that’s exactly what the grassroots spirit is all about, can’t wait to work with them again.
“We continue to provide a platform for countless touring artists from the smaller local acts, to international powerhouses, we’re ever adapting and always accommodating. It’s been an interesting few years for our industry but it’s great to be nominated for such an award amongst our peers, and what better timing than when we’re preparing to celebrate 40 years afloat.”
