The showcase of new writing is at Tobacco Factory Theatres this September
It’s a brand new theatre season starting in Bristol this week. With it comes a host of exciting new shows – including The Acts.
To greet the season of new work, CRIPtic Arts is celebrating by offering its audiences a discount code.
The company – run by Disabled people and producing work by Disabled creatives – has described their exciting new show as a ‘genre-defying’ showcase.
The Acts features writing from emerging Disabled theatremakers – including those from Bristol.
Crucially, all performances are accessible. They are relaxed, have integrated audio description, BSL-interpretation and creative captioning.
The company’s Creative Artistic Director, Jamie Hale said: “At CRIPtic Arts, we’re finding routes for people to access creativity, building pathways to develop creative careers, getting disabled led stories made & onto stages, giving disabled creatives the tools to make their work accessible & to advocate for themselves, so they can have a ripple effect on the industry.”
Hale added that The Acts will also be kicking off a year-long programme of new work, artist support and engagement. There will also be a continuation of free online workshops for everyone.
The Arts Council England supported company aims to ensure that Disabled young people with high physical access needs are supported to reduce the systemic disablist barriers they face in the industry.
The four new pieces of writing you are able to experience at Tobacco Factory Theatres this week are:
Hot and Cold by Fran Bushe
Fran Bushe’s piece Hot and Cold sees a ‘riotous and unflinchingly honest’ look at the chaos of perimenopause where heat, humour and vulnerability meet head on.
Grace has a lot on her plate: Her husband is keeping a sex diary, her mother keeps flashing the nurses … and Grace is pretty sure she is turning into a giant lizard. Expect a funny and raw exploration of perimenopause, being part of the sandwich generation and not recognising your own body.
The Double Draw by Hannah Finn & Morgan Barbour / Duo Artemis
A circus show, bringing together a dazzling blend of acrobatics, archery, acrobatics and physical theatre is Hannah Finn & Morgan Barbour / Duo Artemis’ piece.
Two rival sister huntresses. One craves control. One craves freedom. They both compete beneath the goddess Artemis’ watch.
Ride the Wind – Jordan Charles
Weaving Yoruba mythology, puppetry and West African dance to induce a state of enchantment, this original Afro-fantasy musical reaches across the vastness of history and through the artificial veil of colonial disenfranchisement. When an ostracised, disabled boy is granted the power of flight by a Storm Goddess, will he use it in vengeance or heroism?
The Making of the Eye Show – Kat Bond
Kat Bond brings us a satire with The Making of the Eye Show. It’s everything anyone’s ever thought about eyes, visual impairment and able anxiety. It is a reaction to Kat’s own impulse post diagnosis of a degenerative eye condition to make a pity party piece. Featuring clowning, stand up and storytelling.
