Prom Kween Review at The Wardrobe Theatre Bristol

Prom Kween
The Wardrobe Theatre
Saturday 15 September 2.00pm

The marketing for this show reads: Think Grease meets Drag Race meets a Trump rally with sequins. Lots of sequins. That definitely seems to be the best way to sum up this musical pop culture coming of age American satire that is ‘uncomfortably topical’.

It follows the character of non-binary Matthew – played by four different cast members – who decides to stand for school prom queen against Mean Girl Lexi.

He is guided by fairy godmother character Ru Paul, as he navigates the difficult world of the American high school pecking order.

The references and jokes come thick and very fast and as Ru Paul glides across the stage with a glittery sign saying Gender Neutral Toilet, it feels like an Hallelujah Moment.

Whilst the acerbic wit is non-stop, the final message is one of love. In its closing moments it poignantly pays homage to the Orlando shooting, a terrorist attack which took place at a gay nightclub in 2016, killing 49 people and injuring many more. It’s a hard hitting ending, further putting the previous hour’s satire into stark context.

I was gutted to have left it to the Saturday matinee to watch this, as I would have happily brought my eleven year old to watch the evening performance had it not been sold out.

I definitely need more of this kind of theatre in my life. Biting, clever, funny, with so much energy and enthusiasm and a ton of glitter. If you missed this in Bristol, it’s a shame.
