Next time you’re in the area, take a look upwards

Watershed in Bristol is a cultural hub featuring cinemas showing international and independent film, food and drink spaces and operates as a creative media hub.

However, the building’s origins are part of Bristol’s maritime history.

The Victorian Dockside Shed E building was built by architect Edward Gabriel in 1894. If you look up at the end of the building, there’s a really impressive pediment sculpture.

The left side of the ornamental feature shows a woman holding a trident whilst sitting on a scroll. A cherub and owl sit alongside her.

On the right hand side, a woman leans on a globe. A cherub next to her holds a trumpet.

Both sides feature some really very decorative embellishments for a dock building.

There are lots of friezes around central Bristol. Corn Street is another location where you might want to take a look up next time you’re in the area.
